What is loose leaf tea?

Loose tea leaves which are higher in quality, larger leaves that require longer brewing time compared with the low quality tea dust used in teabags. Loose leaf tea produces a brighter, richer flavor with fewer impurities and chemical residues.

Why is loose leaf tea better than tea from a teabag?

The majority of tea used in teabags is commercially grown and harvested by machine indiscriminately from large scale tea farms. This tea is then artificially enhanced with colors and flavors to disguise it's taste before being placed in teabags which are often made from synthetic materials which have been bleached.

Quality loose leaf tea comes from small tea gardens where it is usually picked by hand to ensure only the new leaves are picked and to avoid damaging the leaves then; it is then processed using centuries old methods to ensure the highest quality taste.

Is it safe to drink tea if i'm pregnant?

In general it is not recommended for pregnant or breast feeding women to drink too much caffeine however most herbal or rooibos teas are safe to drink.

You should always check with your doctor first.

Are There Teas I Should Avoid While Pregnant Or Breastfeeding?

For personal health questions, your best bet is always to speak up to your healthcare provider. All of our teas have detailed ingredient lists, so you have the info you need to ask your doctor whether specific blends or ingredients are right for you.

How fresh are our teas?

We receive tea shipments quarterly that are sealed in air tight containers prior to use.

Why are our teas flavored?

We offer a number of unflavored teas however sometimes the nicest teas are made by including liquid flavorings during the blending process.

When we do add flavoring we only use natural flavoring free of diacetyl and we always make sure to note the presence of the flavoring in the ingredients.

Why do your teas contain flavoring?

While we offer a ton of amazing unflavored teas, sometimes we fall for a blend that does contain flavoring. The fact is, flavoring is the reason some of our favorite blends taste so great. Keep in mind that no matter how strong the taste may be, the actual amount of flavoring in a brewed cup of tea is next to nothing — about 0.001%.

But if flavoring isn’t your thing, you’ve still got options. We carry many unflavored blends… and adding!

What’s the difference between natural and artificial flavoring?

Different kinds of flavoring have more in common than you might think. In a lot of cases, natural and artificial flavorings have the exact same chemical composition — they’re just made in different ways. Artificial flavoring is every bit as safe to drink as natural flavoring.

Natural flavoring comes from all natural sources, such as essential oils, essences or extracts. And when it complies with certain regulatory standards, we get to use the word organic.

When a flavor doesn’t come entirely from natural sources, it’s considered artificial. Some artificial flavorings are almost 100% natural — others are entirely man-made. But if any component of a flavor is created artificially, it has to be labeled as artificial. Why use artificial flavoring? We always use the most delicious, best quality ingredients we can find, and sometimes an all-natural option simply isn’t available.

What are "single-origin" teas?

A single-origin tea is a tea where all the leaves come from a single growing estate and have not been blended with leaves from other estates even within the same growing region and have not been artificially flavored in any way. As only the best quality growers are chosen to produce our range of single-origin teas they are highly sought after for their superior taste and aroma by tea connoisseurs.

Are your teas organic?

We have a range of organic teas available.

Are your teas fair trade certified?

Many of the ingredients which come from developing nations are sourced inline with a Fair Trade program.

The basic guidelines for a fair trade certified product are that: the workers receive fair wages, the workers family has access to health and education services for their family, the estate is operating in an environmentally sustainable manor and the estate is receiving a fair price for their produce.

What are Fair Trade CertifiedTM  teas (and why does it matter)?

Fair Trade USA certification supports the sustainable growth and ethical production and trading of ingredients. The Fair Trade CertifiedTM logo stands for fair wages, safe working conditions, eco-friendly practices and a commitment to community development. By partnering with Fair Trade USA, we’re giving back to the people growing our teas and the communities they live in.

Why aren’t all of your teas Fair Trade?

We’re proud to offer several Fair Trade Certified teas, and a wider selection of organic teas. But it’s also very important to us to make sure we offer teas at prices that are accessible to all of our customers. Because the cost of Fair Trade Certified teas is higher – for our vendors, company and customers – we also offer teas that do not carry Fair Trade certification.

There are two main reasons why a specific tea or ingredient in a tea might not be certified by a Fair Trade organization.

First, Fair Trade programs are only aimed at developing countries however many of our ingredients are sourced from first world countries including Australia, Japan, France, Spain and South Africa where workers rights are long established.

Secondly some of our teas come from very small estates, estates so small that the only workers are the owners and their family which means that there is no need to guarantee the rights of these workers.

What is proposition 65?

Proposition 65 is a law in the state of California. It requires businesses to include a warning label on any products that may contain a measurable amount of any of the 900 chemicals listed by the state of California, many of which already naturally occur in the environment.

It’s important to note that most of these quantifiable levels are often well below the FDA’s and CFIA’s current tolerable intake levels. Most agricultural products sold in California — like everyday fruits and veggies — bear this warning, since trace levels of lead are often found in the environment. That’s why you’ll see it on popular products like avocados, dried berries and even brussels sprouts commonly have this warning.

Are Sigh Noon Tea & Beverages products safe?

Our assortment of teas is safe for consumption. Just like vegetables, teas are grown outside in fields, so there is a possibility that they can come in contact with pesticides and heavy metals. That said, our teas undergo thorough testing and are safe for consumption as per industry and federal standards. We’re committed to providing nothing but the very best for our customers, which is why we also go above and beyond, offering one of the largest organic tea selections in North America.

At Sigh Noon Tea & Beverages we care about the health and safety of our customers. We want to make sure you know exactly what goes into your mug. That’s why the products we sell have passed through regulatory safety standards, as well as our own internal high quality standards — so you can trust that when you buy a tea from Sigh Noon Tea & Beverages it’s safe to consume.

Why would there be lead in matcha green tea?

Since teas are grown outside in fields, there’s a possibility they come in contact with lead found in soil. How did it get there in the first place? Its presence in agricultural products can be attributed to industrialization, which has increased with the use of burning coal, oil and other fossil fuels. This results in an increase of lead in the environment, which is then absorbed by plants and agricultural products.

How do I make the perfect cup of tea?

Depending on the tea type and ingredients, we recommend different steeping times and temperatures to make sure the flavors are just right. You can find our recommended steeping instructions on each tea’s product label.

How do I know when the water temperature is right?

While temperature is easy to determine if you have a thermometer, how can you tell without one? The easiest trick is the boil-and-wait method below. Keep in mind these are just guidelines and not a guarantee.

  • 203°F – 194°F: Once your kettle has boiled, let sit for about 1-3 min with the lid open
  • 185°F – 176°F: Once your kettle has boiled, let sit for about 7-8 min with the lid open
  • 167°F: Once your kettle has boiled, let sit for about 10 min with the lid open

What other ways can I enjoy tea?

Some like it hot, some like it iced and some like it in their recipes! The possibilities are endless..

How do I make iced tea?

Our rule of thumb is to double the amount! This means if you use 1 teaspoon for your hot tea, you should use 2 teaspoons for making it iced. Steep your tea in 1/2 the amount of hot liquid, and pour over ice! Remember to use double the amount of tea you would use for hot tea and count the ice as part of your total water volume when deciding on how much tea to use.

How do I make a latte?

Our rule of thumb is to quadruple the amount! This means if you use 1 teaspoon for your hot tea, then we would use 4 teaspoons for making a latte (hot and iced).

How do I make matcha?

For some, it’s a ceremony. For others, an art. For us, making the perfect cup of matcha green tea is a relaxing ritual and the perfect way to reset. You can make delicious matcha in just a few minutes!

Can I cold brew loose leaf tea?

Cold Brew teas were specially designed to be safely brewed in cold water. Because they go through an additional bacteria reduction process and are prepackaged in a sterile environment, you can skip the hot water step normally needed to eliminate naturally occurring bacteria.

Since the rest of our teas were not developed for cold brewing, it is not recommended that you steep them in cold water.

What is the best way to store tea?

Once opened, loose tea should be stored in an airtight container such as a tin or jar and kept away from light and moisture. When stored in this way quality loose leaf teas won’t start to lose their flavor for up to two years. Don’t worry though, the tea can still be used even after two years you may just need to increase the number of leaves.

Does tea expire?

No, tea does not expire; it just loses freshness over time. To ensure the freshest teas, please refer to the previous section.

How long does your tea stay fresh and how should I store it?

The answer is… it depends on the tea! Because some of our blends have big chunks of fruit, chocolate and other great stuff, they don’t always stay fresh as long as our traditional straight teas. To keep your teas fresh, always store them in a cool, dry, dark place and keep them well sealed.
To make sure you’re always getting the best cup of tea possible, we recommend you follow these guidelines:

  • Teas and infusions with fruits and nuts: consume within 6 months from date of purchase
  • Straight teas: consume within 12 months from date of purchase.
